The BMP format handles sparse bitmaps but is not supported on all operating systems or browsers. The files can contain images that are 1, 4, 8, or 24 bits per pixel. The 1-, 4-, and 8-bit images have color maps, while the 24-bit images are direct color. Windows BMP supports mono, 16-color, 256-color, and 16 million-color.
