The background color: the value can be entered in a number of different ways:
Red

Tint: this example will set the color to a 55% tint of the default color book color "Red".

Percentage brightness: in this example, 50% Red from Registration.

Hexadecimal RGB colors

A new color chosen from one of the color books: can only be applied to text once this chosen color has been defined in the document.

Additional Information
The background color normally surrounds just the equation unless one of the commands \displaylines, \equaligno, \eqno etc. is used, in which case the background extends for the full width of the Maths measure.
