In the notes below, the main element (nuc) and sub- and super-scripts are arranged: nuc sup \atop \sub
If no superscript exists, the subscript is dropped by the greater of:
• bottom of nuc plus sub drop (at subscript size)
• sub1
• height of subscript minus ? x-Height.
• If no subscript exists, the superscript is raised by the greater of:
• top of nuc minus sup drop (at superscript size)
• sup1,2 or 3 if displaystyle, cramped or other
• depth of superscript +¼ x-Height

If the distance between the sub and superscripts is less than 4 times the default rule width, the subscript is lowered until it is exactly 4 the default rule width. The sub— and superscript are then raised so that the bottom of the superscript is at least ? x-Height.
