Many engineers, as well as scientists, economists and others, risk their most important calculations to spreadsheets. Recently a major spreadsheet cell error caused international outrage. Two economists conducted a 2010 study which resulted in the conclusion that “median growth rates for countries with public debt over 90% of GDP are roughly 1% lower than otherwise; average (mean) growth rates are several percent lower.” These results have been widely used by politicians, media, other economists, and the world to help in finding solutions to the Great Recession. Research into the study later showed that there were three serious issues with the economists’ research: Selective Exclusions, Unconventional Weighting, and Coding Error.
Analysts insist coding error does not need to be the norm. There have been major advancements in calculation solutions over the years. Explore the links below as the pros elaborate on these and other “opportunities for improvement” in technical calculation tools.
