Windows XP Itanium Support: Important Information for PTC CustomersDear Valued PTC Customer:
The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the planned change in our Windows 64-bit roadmap for PTC applications. PTC feels this change will better align us with our customers growing demands for attaining maximum benefit of the latest technology available.
In February 2004, Intel announced their plans to expand their Intel Xeon(TM) processor architecture by adding 64-bit extension technology. With this new enhancement, systems powered by this new chip will be able to successfully operate in both 32-bit and 64-bit modes.
Responding to the Intel announcement, HP publicly announced their plans to support this new technology in their next generation Xeon workstations running Windows XP-64. HP feels that this new technology is a complement to existing Intel processor family. As a benefit, customers will receive systems that will expand with their growing demand for more memory when dealing with large datasets, by enabling users to move to a 64-bit environment on the same hardware. Not only will they experience greater memory allocation, but also enhanced performance and overall cost of ownership will be drastically improved.
Understanding the market shift, PTC plans to officially support these new HP systems running Windows XP-64 once they are available; the target time frame is late 2004, early 2005. Once these systems are available, with assistance from HP and Intel, PTC will be providing not only support for Pro/ENGINEER(R) Wildfire(TM) 2.0 and Pro/ENGINEER Structural and Thermal Simulation, but also Pro/INTRALINK(R) 3.4 and Windchill(R) 7.0 (client only).
Additionally, as a result of this announcement, PTC will no longer be supporting the Intel Itanium systems for Pro/ENGINEER, Pro/INTRALINK and Windchill, effective June 1st, 2004. With this decertification of the Intel Itanium and PTC's plans to support the next generation Xeon better aligns us with the growing customer demand for supporting an architecture that will operate in 32-bit and 64-bit modes with improved performance, memory allocation and lower total cost of ownership.
If you are a Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire customer who has purchased a HP Itanium machine, please send an email to the following address, firstname.lastname@example.org. PTC intends to work with you to help facilitate transitional issues that may arise.
PTC will be offering a Pro/ENGINEER-Pro/INTRALINK 64-Bit Beta Program on these new systems later this year. If your company is interested in participating, send an email to the following address, email@example.com, and we will contact you prior to the program.
PTC is committed to providing our customers value throughout their product development process. By adding Windows 64-bit support to the long list of certified platforms for Pro/ENGINEER and Windchill, PTC is confident that customers will be able to continue to take advantage of the latest innovations delivered by the platform market.
