Replacing a Part with an Existing Part or Alternate/Substitute
Replacement parts can be used in an assembly when the original part is not available. As described in Managing Replacement Parts, you can replace a part with a new or existing part, or you can replace a part with an alternate or substitute.
Before you can replace a part with an alternative or substitute, you have to define the alternate or substitute relationship. For more information, see Defining Replacements in a Part Structure.You can show and hide replacement parts in the structure, but it is not required to complete the Replace actions. For more information, see Viewing Related Information in a Structure.
Use the following procedure to replace a part in an assembly with one of its alternates or substitutes.
1. Navigate to the part information page, and select the Structure tab of the assembly using the part to be replaced.
2. Select the part you want to replace from the Replace menu in the right-click action menu.
*
The Replace with Alternate/Substitute action is grayed out if no alternates or substitutes are defined for the part.
3. Select the part you want to use as a replacement and click OK.
4. If the part is within a structure that is synchronized with CAD, a message appears asking if you want the change synchronized with future CAD builds. For more information, see Top-down Design.
5. If not checked out previously, the parent assembly is automatically checked out. Check in the parent part if no further modifications are required. A new iteration of the parent assembly is created.
6. If you’ve selected an alternate or substitute part, note the following:
When the original part is replaced by a substitute, the original part is shown as a substitute.
When the original part is replaced by a two-way alternate, the original part is shown as an alternate. However, the original part is not shown as an alternate when the alternate is one-way.
Performing a Replace with a Substitute that has Quantity and Reference Designators Defined
Substitute parts can have predefined quantity and reference designators.
When a part in a product structure is replaced by a substitute part, the quantity and referenced designators defined on the substitute part are used to create occurrences on the uses relationship in the assembly. The occurrences of the original part are deleted. The quantity and reference designators for the original part are saved when it is added to the Replacements table as a new substitute part.
