Creating a New Part Configuration
A part configuration is created from a part structure filtered using a configuration specification. The part from which the create operation is launched is called the base part. The base part must meet the following criteria:
It must reside in a product or library context.
It is not a configurable part.
It is not checked out.
You have create permission.
Launch the New Part Configuration window from one of the following locations:
Click on New > New Part Configuration in the New/Add To action set on the Structure tab toolbar.
When the operation is launched from this location the current configuration specification filter is used for the new part configuration.
*
Only the configuration specification filter is used when creating a new part configuration. No other filter type is supported.
Select New > New Part Configuration from the Actions menu at the top of the part information page.
The configuration specification used for the part configuration in this case depends on whether or not you have previously viewed the part structure on the Structure tab. If you have never viewed the part structure for the part, a Latest configuration specification is used; otherwise the configuration specification in effect when you last viewed the part structure is used.
When the New Part Configuration window opens, follow these steps to create a new part configuration:
1. Enter a name and description for the part configuration.
2. Select the method to use to Populate the part configuration.
If you select Basic, the system populates the part configuration with only those branches of the base part structure that have traceable descendant parts. This makes it possible to allocate the traceable child parts to traceable parent parts, thereby completely defining a serialized part instance. Basic part configurations can be significantly smaller and easier to work with than a full part configuration.
If you select Full the system navigates the part structure, adding the base part version plus all the child part versions that it encounters (up to, but not including descendent traceable parts) as members of the part configuration. Create full part configurations if the serialized product instances need to capture the versions of all parts.
3. Click OK.
The new part configuration is created, and its information page is displayed.
