Configuring a Remote SQL Server Database to Work with the Windchill Server
In a multi-tier system where the SQL Server database is not running on the same machine as the Windchill codebase, the creation of the Windchill database user account remotely is not supported using PSI. Before Windchill is installed on the Windchill machine, PSI must be run on the SQL Server host and the SQL Server Configuration option must be selected to create a database and user.
Prior to installing you should know:
The SQL Server installation Name
The password for the default SQL Server Admin user “sa”
A user name and password for an account used to install Windchill into SQL Server. If you do not also create a separate application user (see below), this installation account will be used to connect Windchill as well.
(optional) A user name and password for an account to connect and execute Windchill in SQL Server. This allows for greater security by isolating permissions required to execute Windchill from permissions required to create the database.
Perform the following on the SQL Server database server:
1. Launch the PTC Solution Installer. For more information, see Using the PTC Solution Installer.
2. Enter the appropriate settings in the language, introduction and License Agreement windows.
3. Select the Solution installation type and click Next.
4. Select the Standalone Product or Component and click Next.
5. Select SQL Server Configuration.
Select Create Windchill Database and Installation User
Select Create Windchill Database Application User for greater security if required.
6. Select the installation directories. For more information, see Specifying the Installation Directory.
*
This is the installer path and location for the SQL Server Configuration Utility. The location selected is where both the datafiles and transaction log file will be initially installed. Optionally, you can select different locations for datafiles and transaction log file. The best practice for a production SQL Server deployment is use separate disks (or logical volumes in a striped array) for the transaction log and the datafiles, so this will be done in a later step after the initial installation is complete.
Select the Base Data Language. For more information, see Specifying Language Settings.
7. Select the database size. For more information, see Selecting the Database Size. The following sizes are recommended:
Demo/Test (1500 Mb)
Production (2500 Mb)
Large (5000 Mb)
8. Enter your database settings. For more information, see Entering Your Database Information. After setting the initial size, the database information window requires the correct location of the installed SQL Server software, the sa password, and the usernames and passwords used to install and connect Windchill. The PSI will validate the connection before proceeding.
9. If you are using a staging area, copy the SQL Server Configuration files from the "Windchill 3rd Party Software" CD to the staging directory.
10. Review the installation overview and click Install. For more information, see Reviewing the Installation Overview.

By clicking Save, you can save the information for future reference in HTML format within this dialog. All password information will be stored in clear text in the HTML document.
You can now continue installing your Windchill solution on the Windchill server.
