Working with Replication
Replication reduces the time that it takes to access data by copying data to external file vaults that can be accessed quickly from other external vaults, the Windchill Oracle database, or both. A Windchill File Server is a lightweight server (meaning that it does not have a Windchill database) for Windchill data that can store mastered or replicated content. Networks of File Servers allow rapid local access to content at multiple, distributed sites, while ensuring secure storage of master data.
Replication must be configured in order to work. For detailed information about how to configure replication, see the
replication overview.
Following is the process for replication:
1. The administrator creates the rule.
2. The administrator creates a schedule and associates the schedule with a target vault.
3. The system searches for all the rules associated with the selected target vault.
4. The system runs the replication job accordingly.

You cannot associate a rule with a schedule directly.

The schedules can be set up to be recurring or to occur one time only. Schedules, in turn, drive replication jobs that do the actual replication work. Recurring schedules drive multiple jobs at specific intervals.
You can access the following replication task areas from the File Server Administration page:
• Vault Configuration—Allows you to work with sites, hosts, vaults, and folders
• Replication Scheduler—Allows you to create schedules, manage rules, and view jobs and schedules
• Site Administration—Allows you to view, create, update, and delete sites and to update and manage security keys.
In addition, a remote user can
set preferred File Server sites for faster uploads and downloads.

Two configuration activities are most easily performed on a remote site rather than the master site: placing the security key in a place accessible to a File Server and editing the File Server's wt.properties file.

It is important to note that content that is mastered in remote vaults is not indexed for search. For more information, see
