Complete Activities
When you complete an activity, you set its Actual Finish date. How it is set depends on your plan execution type:
Manual—The Actual Finish date is set to the Estimated Finish date, regardless of whether the two are the same.
Automatic Execution—The Actual Finish date is set to the current date and time.
*
When you complete an activity, the Actual Work value is updated to match the Estimated Work value. This behavior is controlled by the Keep Actual Work preference. To update the Work value instead, set this preference to Yes.
*
The following status indicators appear when an activity has been completed:
Completed—Completed on or before the deadline. This indicator also appears when no deadline is set.
Completed Late—Completed after the deadline.
Canceled—This indicator appears when an incomplete activity has been canceled due to a change in plan or project state. This indicator only appears in automatic execution plans. For more information, see Automatic Execution.
Summary activities are completed when all of their child activities are completed. This is true even if the summary activity includes deliverable subjects.
Otherwise, an activity is completed when the % Work Complete field equals 100.
You can complete an activity using several methods:
Open the Track Work window for the activity. Enter 100 into the % Work Complete field, or enter a value into the Actual Work field that is equal to or greater than the amount of work required for the activity.
If an activity has resource assignments, then the activity is complete when all associated resource assignment tasks have been completed.
To manually complete a resource assignment task, open the Track Work for Selected Assignments window and enter 100 into the % Work Complete field. Alternatively, you can also enter 0 into the Remaining Work field or enter a value into the Actual Work field that is equal to or greater than the amount of work required for the assignment.
Complete
The Complete action appears in the following situations:
From the right-click actions menu of resource assignments in the Tasks table. (Manual and automatically executed projects.)
From the right-click actions menu of in-process activities in the Tasks table and the Schedule table. (Automatically executed projects only.)
The % Work Complete is automatically set to 100 and the Actual Work field is updated to reflect all work hours have been completed.
Automatically Executed Plans
If you are working in an automatically executed plan, then you can only complete and track work for eligible activities.
There are several reasons why you might not be able to complete an activity, including the following:
The activity is the dependent task in a Finish-to-Finish predecessor relationship, and its predecessor has not been completed. Or it is the dependent task in a Start-to-Finish predecessor relationship, and its predecessor has not yet started. For more information, see Predecessor Relationships.
The activity constraint type is Must Finish On, and the constraint date has not been reached. For more information, see Activity Date Constraints.
To complete an activity, the activity must be in process, the project must be in the Running state, and the plan must be in the In Process state. For more information, see Automatic Execution.
