Allocating a New Part Instance
Allocation is used to specify the child part instances used in a parent part instance. All of the lower level part instance lot/serial numbers must be allocated to fully describe a higher level serialized assembly part instance.
The following criteria must be met to allocate a new child part instance to a parent part instance:
The selected part usage in the parent assembly is traceable by serial number, lot number, or lot/serial number.
The selected part is not a configurable part.
You have permission to create a part instance.
You have modify permission for the parent part instance.
The Allocate New Part Instance action creates and allocates a new part instance in one operation. Use the following procedure to create and allocate a new part instances:
1. From the Structure tab on the information page of the higher level part instance, select the lower level traceable part in the structure pane and select Allocate New Part Instance from the right mouse button menu.
*
A traceable part must also be specified as traceable in the parent assembly. Change the Trace Code in the Uses tab of the part Structure shown on the part information page.
2. The table below describes the sections within the Allocate New Part Instance window.

This section shows the identity of the Part Instance and Base Part for the parent part instance. The values in these fields cannot be edited.

This section shows:
Base Part – The part from which the configuration and instance is created. This field is for information only and may not be edited.
Base Part Version – Select the base part version from the drop-down list. This selection will determine the available part configurations.
Part Configuration – Select the part configuration to use to create the part instance from the drop-down list.
*
You can create a part instance without first creating a part configuration by selecting the blank choice. The part configuration can be assigned at a later time. Use this technique to reserve part instance serial numbers.
Type – Select the part instance type from the drop-down list. If no additional types are available the standard type is shown.
Manufacturer ID – Search for and select the globally unique organization identifier that identifies the manufacturer of the part instance.
Attributes
Enter the Serial Number that uniquely identifies the part instance.
*
The attributes shown in this section may change depending on the previously selected Type.
3. Click OK to create the new part instance and refresh the part instance structure to show the allocated instances.
*
Prior to the allocation operation an unallocated traceable part is marked with a part master icon . Once the allocation is complete the part master icon is replaced with an ordinary part icon .
*
The Allocate New Part Instance action may be performed on an nonoccurrence summary row. In this situation a new occurrence is created and a new part instance is allocated in the same operation. The quantity of the nonoccurrence summary row is decreased by one and the new occurrence is displayed in a separate row. If the creation of the new occurrence reduces the nonoccurrence summary row quantity to 0 the summary row disappears.
