Creating a Classic Milestone
*
Only project or program managers can create milestones.
You can create a milestone by clicking the new milestone icon on the Plan table.
The New Milestone window is divided into the following steps:
1. Under the Identify Milestone step, complete the following fields and then click Next:
Field
Description
Milestone Name
Enter the name of the new milestone. This field is required.
Predecessors
Click Select to choose any predecessors for the milestone. Predecessor plan objects define constraint relationships for the plan object being created and allow you to sequence the milestones in a project or program. For example, if Milestone A is named as a predecessor to Milestone B, then Milestone B cannot be completed until Milestone A has been completed.
*
It is best to define predecessors for date maker milestones which complete as soon as all predecessor plan objects complete. The milestone is then used to indicate that a set of plan objects has completed.
Milestone Owner
Select a team member from the drop-down list to be assigned as the milestone owner.
Description
Specifies a brief description of the milestone. Enter up to 4,000 characters.
Estimated Start
Enter the date on which the milestone work is to begin. Use the date format specified next to the field. (For example, if the specified date format is MM/DD/YYYY, the date could appear as 03/30/2005.) Click the calendar icon to select a specific date from the calendar.
*
If this milestone is a date marker milestone, you do not need to enter this information.
Estimated Duration
Enter the number of days in which the completion of the milestone is expected to take or leave the field blank. If you enter a specific number, a Calculate check box appears during an edit of the milestone. If you select that check box, your entered number is overridden by an automatically calculated number from the system.
*
If you plan to use this milestone as a goal measurement, leave this field blank. The duration is automatically calculated based on any associated deliverables.
If you plan to use this milestone as a point in time, enter 0.
Estimated Finish
Enter the date by which it is estimated that the milestone will be complete. If a duration has been specified, this date will automatically be calculated based on the estimated start and duration values.
Due Date
Enter the date after which the milestone is considered overdue if it has not been completed. Use the date format specified next to the field. (For example, if the specified date format is MM/DD/YYYY, the date could appear as 03/30/2005.) Click the calendar icon to select a specific date from the calendar.
*
This field can only be edited by the project or program manager.
Done
Enter the percentage of the milestone work that is completed. If deliverables are associated to the milestone, this is automatically calculated based on the percentage complete of the deliverables.
Status
Select the current status of the milestone from the drop-down list. Green indicates no problems. Yellow indicates caution. Red indicates an alert of high risk. If deliverables are associated to the milestone, this is automatically calculated based on the status of the deliverables.
Status Description
Enter a description of the reasons for the status designation. Enter up to 4,000 characters.
2. Under the Choose Position step, complete the following fields and then click Next:
