ThingWorx Edge ADO Service > Installing the ADO Service
Installing the ADO Service
This section describes how to install and configure the ThingWorx ADO Service to connect to a Microsoft database source.
As an example, if you plan to connect an SQL Server to the ThingWorx platform through a firewall using the ThingWorx WebSocket-based Edge MicroServer and the ThingWorx Edge .NET SDK, you would install the ThingWorx ADO Service on the same client as the SQL Server.
To install the ThingWorx ADO Service, do the following:
1. Obtain the ThingWorx ADO Service application (version 5.5.0 or later). You can download the ThingWorx ADO Service application from the PTC Software Downloads page.
If you want to use an embedded FIPS module, make sure that you download the FIPS version of the ADO service and the .NET SDK.
2. Extract the files from the ZIP file to install.
3. From the Start menu, right-click Command Prompt and select Run As Administrator.
If you do not select Run As Administrator when launching a Command Prompt window, the installation of the ADO as a service will fail with an exception similar to the following:
An exception occurred during the Install phase.
System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot open Service Control Manager on computer '.'.
This operation might require other privileges.
The inner exception System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception was thrown with the
following error message: Access is denied.
4. From the command line, run the following on the remote PC:
InstallUtil.exe ThingworxADOService.exe
where InstallUtil can be found in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ on 32 bit systems, and C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\ on 64 bit systems.
