About Inserting Imported Features as Solids, Surfaces, and Cuts
You can choose whether to create the inserted features as surfaces, solid protrusions, or solid cuts. You can insert the solid features as additive or subtractive solids. However, you cannot subtract material from the existing model if it is not a solid.
To insert geometry as solid protrusions or surfaces, the imported geometry must consist of at least a single closed quilt. Additionally, during the initial import of the geometry, you must set the Solidify closed volumes import profile option. While the default setting of this option creates surfaces, setting Solidify closed volumes to Yes creates solid protrusions. You must also explicitly set the Import type option to Geometry in the import profile or the File dialog box as you cannot create surfaces, protrusions, and cuts from curves or facet geometry.

* You cannot use imported facet geometry to create solid cuts. If the imported features consist of brep and facet geometry, you can use the brep geometry to create cuts.
You can then use the solid feature options on the Import tab to solidify closed volumes and insert them as solid protrusions or surfaces. The options to create solid protrusions () and surfaces () are not available on the Import tab when the imported features do not contain at least a single closed quilt.
If the existing model consists of solid features and if you accessed the options on the Import tab to insert the imported geometry as solid protrusions or surfaces, you can use to remove material from the existing model. This option is not available when the existing geometry does not consist of solid features.
