Integrated Datum Reference Frame Object in Model-Based Definition

If a geometric tolerance annotation contains datum references, a datum reference frame is automatically added to the GTOL in the Model Tree. The datum reference frame is initially created in an incomplete state. This means that it does not have an associated coordinate system in the model. The datum reference frame icon in the Model Tree indicates whether it is complete or incomplete.

To complete the datum reference frame, define the location of the associated coordinate system. Right-click the datum reference frame in the Model Tree and select Define Coordinate System. Each datum reference frame has a unique signature, which reflects the datum references, including modifiers, that are specified in the geometric tolerance. You can see the signature of the datum reference frame in the tooltip displayed in the graphics window as well as in the dialog box for placing the coordinate system.

If more than one geometric tolerance in the model has the same datum references, they also share the same datum reference frame. If the datum references specified in the geometric tolerance are changed or if the geometric tolerance is deleted, the datum reference frames are automatically updated as needed. If an incomplete datum reference frame object no longer has at least one owning geometric tolerance, it is automatically removed from the model. If a complete datum reference frame object no longer has at least one owning geometric tolerance, it is placed in a folder, Unused DRFs, in the Model Tree. If a new geometric tolerance is later created with references that match the signature of a complete datum reference frame in the Unused DRFs folder, then the following occurs:

• The complete datum reference frame is removed from the Unused DRFs folder.

• The complete datum reference frame is assigned to that geometric tolerance.
