To Remove Surfaces with the Remove Tool
Use this procedure to remove solid or quilt surfaces, surface sets, or intent surfaces. To remove edges, refer to the topic To Remove Edges with the Remove Tool in the links below.
1. Do one of the following:
Click Model > Editing > Remove.
Click Flexible Modeling > Remove.
The Remove Surface tab opens with Surface selected, and the Surfaces to remove collector active.
2. Select surfaces from a single body or a single quilt to remove.
*
You can also select surfaces to remove first, and then open the Remove Surface tab.
3. To remove the selected surface without extending or trimming the neighboring surfaces, click Leave Open. When this option is selected, the attachment options on the Options tab become unavailable. Additionally, the following changes appear in the resulting geometry:
Solids are converted to quilts.
Closed quilts are converted to open quilts.
4. To set how the geometry that results from removing surfaces will attach to the model, click the Options tab, and select an option:
When the surface to remove belongs to a solid:
Select Solid to create the attached geometry as solid geometry.
Select Surface to create the attached geometry as quilt geometry.
When the surface to remove belongs to a quilt:
Select Same quilt to create the attached geometry as part of the existing quilt.
Select New quilt to create the attached geometry as a new quilt.
5. To convert the selected surface to a separate quilt instead of removing it, on the Options tab, select the Keep removed surfaces check box.
6. When the surface set that is selected for removal defines a shape, and some of the surfaces are shared by other shapes that are not included in the surface set, select an option:
To split the shared surfaces so that only the portions of the shared surfaces that belong to the selected shape are removed, on the Options tab, select the Auto split shape surfaces check box.
To remove the entire shared surface, including portions that do not belong to the shape to remove, clear the Auto split shape surfaces check box.
7. When the surface set that is selected for removal contains multi-contour surfaces, to exclude contours from removal, on the Options tab, select the Exclude Contours collector, and then select contours to exclude.
8. To navigate through other possible solutions for geometry configurations for surface removal, on the Options tab, click Next or Previous.
*
When you click Next, the system might stop responding while it tries to find the best possible solution. This is because it checks for all possible combinations for the solution. The system might also stop responding if a solution does not exist.
At this point, to interrupt the check and continue working:
1. While the model is regenerating, click Stop at the bottom of the window to interrupt the regeneration. A failed feature is created.
2. In the Model Tree, click the failed feature and select Edit Definition. Even if you do not make any changes in the settings, this gives you the opportunity to check if the result is what you want.
3. Click OK. The feature regenerates.
When the system is unable to find more than one solution, the Previous and Next options are not available.
You can select a different solution when you redefine the Remove feature.
9. To preserve the topology of the current solution when the feature is regenerated, select the Maintain solution topology check box. If the same topology cannot be reconstructed due to changes in the model, regeneration of the feature will fail.
10. When the result of the Remove feature changes the geometry in one of the following ways, a notifications window opens to help you identify these situations:
Reverses the normal vector of the surface or surface region
Causes surfaces that are not adjacent to the selected geometry to be intersected
Select each item in the list to highlight the affected geometry in the graphics window. Recommended actions for each item are listed.
11. Click OK.
