C) Product Focus: Pro/Engineer Foundation

What is Pro/Engineer Foundation?  It's not your average CAD package!  Let's take a look at the incredible POWER you have for under $6,000.

Here are all the modules that are included in a Pro/Engineer Foundation Package and a brief description of what they do.  I've put an asterisk (*) by the modules that are often overlook and under utilized.  The power within these modules are incredible, one just needs to take a deeper look at the functionality to understand what it could do for your business and enable you to get your work done faster.
If you need more information please email me your questions.
If you are wondering if your license of Pro/Engineer has these modules, please look under the HELP menu at the top of the Pro/Engineer Window, then go to Customer Services Info.  In that window look for Configured Option Modules.  Below this line will list the modules you have with your seat of Pro/Engineer.

*Pro/ECAD - With a Pro/ECAD license, you can exchange information between Pro/ENGINEER and systems for electrical computer aided design (ECAD). Use Pro/ECAD to perform the following operations:
1) Import and export boards through Part mode.
2) Import and export components by extruding cross sections from library files or by mapping ECAD components to Pro/ENGINEER native parts.
3) Import and export component placement information through Assembly mode.

Pro/ENGINEER- Feature-based, associative, parametric, solid-modeling kernel.

*Pro/DETAIL-Users can produce complete, production-ready drawings.

Pro/FEATURE-Gives you the ability to create Family Tables, Advanced Features, and Part Simplified Reps.

Pro/LEGACY-Pro/LEGACY is designed for importing and updating three-dimensional (3D) data and two-dimensional (2D) drawings in Pro/ENGINEER. Using Pro/LEGACY tools, you can easily create, modify, and delete individual geometric entities within imported 3D data, as well as work with geometry and detail information contained in 2D drawings.  You can import a Pro/LEGACY file into Pro/LEGACY using one of the supported formats, then use Pro/LEGACY tools to make some changes to this object. When extensive redesign is required to update the object, you should continue working in basic Pro/ENGINEER.

*Pro/PHOTORENDER- This provides easy access to all the tools needed to quickly create accurate, photorealistic images of Pro/ENGINEER parts and assembles – ideal for sales and marketing communication.

Pro/PLOT-Pro/ENGINEER officially supports more than 150 plotters. Users of Microsoft Windows™ (NT/95/98/2000) operating system platforms can extend the printer and plotter support to those output devices that support a Windows, or compatible, plotter driver. With Pro/ENGINEER, you can create plot files of the current object (sketch, part, drawing, assembly, or layout) and send them to the print queue of a plotter. The plotting interface to HPGL and PostScript formats is standard.

*Pro/REPORT- With Pro/REPORT you can create a repeat region in any mode in which you can create a table (Drawing, Report, Layout, Diagram, or Format mode). You can nest repeat regions or make them two-directional.  This gives you the ability to create Bill of Materials table automatically on drawings and also create an automated table of "Family Table" instances.

Pro/SHEETMETAL DESIGN- Sheet metal design helps users create features such as walls, bends, punches, notches, forms, and reliefs. Then, using a variety of bend allowance calculations, you can create flat patterns of the designs. The result is parametric, fully associative solid models of sheet metal parts and assemblies.

*Pro/Web.Publish-Pro/WEB PUBLISH enables you to:
· Create a paperless environment that reduces the cost of creating and plotting drawings.
· Extend the access to data to all parts of an organization.
The publishing tools enable you to export and then view—in HTML, VRML, CGM, and JPEG formats—the following on the Web browser:
· Assembly models and data
· Assembly processes including graphical and textural information for each process step
· Manufacturing processes including graphical and textural information for each process step Process and assembly information that you view in the browser reflects the process data extracted programmatically from Pro/ENGINEER.  All publications that you create with Pro/WEB PUBLISH are view-only. Once a publication is created, it is independent from the original assembly or process plan.

*Pro/WELD-Users can define joining requirements for welded parts and assemblies and extract valuable information from the model, such as mass properties, clearances and interferences, and cost data. They can also easily produce full, 2D weld documentation.

LIBRARY Access- "Library card" capability gives designers access to comprehensive, expandable libraries of standard parts, features, tools, mold bases, connectors, pipe fittings, symbols, and human body dimensions.

*Pro/ENGINEER BASIC Library- The BASIC LIBRARY is a collection of commonly used parts and features ready to use in your assemblies and parts.
1) Common features-A collection of commonly used features (pertaining to geometry, design, piping, and so on) of generic shapes (such as hexagonal, oval, and octagonal) and sizes. These are UDFs with cross-sections, feature attributes, relations, and layer information built into the feature. The features are ready to use in your parts.

Standardized parts-A collection of common fasteners (bolts, nuts, rivets, screws, and so on) of sizes corresponding to ANSI, USAS, and other standards. The parts are easily retrievable using common callouts (such as basic diameter and rivet size) and are ready to use in your assemblies.

Metric parts-A collection of common fasteners in metric sizes that conform to ANSI standards. These parts are also retrievable using common callouts, and are ready to use in assemblies.

ISO fasteners and parts-A collection of common fasteners and parts that conform to the ISO standard. These parts are retrievable using common callouts and are ready to use in assemblies.

*Pro/PHOTORENDER Library - Library of textures, rooms, and sample photorendered images.

Here are the data translation capabilities that come with Pro/Engineer Foundation

Data translation modules include: Pro/DATA for PDGS (Ford Proprietary CAD program), Pro/INTERFACE, Pro/INTERFACE II Bundle, Pro/INTERFACE for STEP (Advanced solid export), Pro/INTERFACE for VRML (Models for the WWW), Pro/PHOTORENDER, CADAM®, MEDUSA (3D ascii format), and AutoCAD® DXF/DWG, IGES, STEP (AP202, AP203, AP214 - including Associative Drafting), SET, VDA, ECAD (IDF 2.0, 3.0), CGM, COSMOS/M, PATRAN®, SUPERTAB™, SLA, CGM (MILSPEC MIL-D-28003A), JPEG, TIFF, RENDER, STL, VRML, INVENTOR, XPATCH

Pro/CDT- The interface between Professional CADAM and Pro/ENGINEER is provided by Pro/CDT.  You can also import mainframe CADAM files by way of a neutral format, CPTR, created by Integrated Industrial Information, Inc . With Pro/CDT, you can import CADAM drawing files and CPTR-Neutral format files into Pro/ENGINEER. After you have imported a drawing from CADAM, you can modify it using the menu commands available in Pro/DETAIL or Pro/LEGACY.

Pro/INTERFACE for CADDS 5- With Pro/INTERFACE for CADDS 5 you can move three-dimensional (3-D) geometric data back and forth between Pro/ENGINEER and CADDS 5. This interface does not require a CADDS 5 license. You can import CADDS 5 parts and assembly structures into Pro/ENGINEER, and you can export Pro/ENGINEER parts and assemblies to native CADDS 5 format. You can also import CADDS 5 Layers

Pro/INTERFACE for CATIA - With a Pro/INTERFACE for CATIA license, you can exchange geometry between Pro/ENGINEER and CATIA. You can transfer data in two ways:
Between Pro/ENGINEER and CATIA running on the same IBM RS6000 or SGI workstation
Between CATIA on an IBM RS/6000 or SGI and Pro/ENGINEER on any Pro/ENGINEER-supported workstation
